As it turned out, my house was up next. Excitement burned through me at the chance to show off how strong the shifters from Apex Academy were, but also because Fero was the general with whom I was the least familiar. I was keen to actually put eyes on the man in a controlled fight like this.

Fero Noriega was the saurian alpha for my house. He was a short but powerful-looking shifter, with red hair and red scales on his face. He had bright red eyes, the same color as his scales, and a long reptilian tail that hung out from the top of his pants. To accommodate his tail, he wore specially tailored pants that rode a little bit lower on his hip, almost like a pair of harem-styled slacks.

Saurians were the shortest phenotype, but capable of physical strength to rival the lycans or lynx. They were known for being incredibly fast and powerful but quick to tire, their low stamina resulting from saurian metabolism. Strong jaws were fierce, but they had no fangs. Instead, they had wide, flat teeth for chewing plants. They had the longest claws of all the shifters, though, and could use their tail as an attack weapon.

I had seen him fight before. I knew he was strong. And his enemy, Drafer, didn’t look like much.

I turned out to be right.

The lynx was just... standard. Just there. It made me think of a substitute teacher. Sure, Drafer was fast, he knew how to fight, and he could go in and out of his shift at a quick pace… but at the end of the day, he was just some guy.

Meanwhile, Fero was sharp-eyed and just plain mean in a match—and I knew for a fact that he had taken to sparring with both Remmy and Monty in his free time. He knew how to handle shifts that came with fangs, and he knew how to use those long, blade-like claws to his advantage.

It was a bloodbath.

My lips pursed. The scent of copper washed over the arena. Part of me didn’t like how fierce and quick to cut Fero was, but it was a small, human aspect of my personality. The part that made me question whether all this violence was really the answer.

It grew quieter with each passing week.

The rest of me—the louder part of me, the part that was thriving as house prime—was thrilled for Fero and proud of him. He slashed his way to the quickest victory of any of the matches that had occurred that day… and soon the gong was sounding.

Fero wasn’t even back in his human shift before medics rushed up into the ring, their hands pulsing with healing magic. There were only a select few shifters that could use spells like that. It was my weakest point.

Alchemy was a sect of knowledge that allowed specialized alchemists and herbalists to create healing potions, poisons, and curses. Many of the shifters that were blessed with magic steered away from the healing
